Farm Land West Grey Ontario

The Windsor Essex region is home to Canada's largest greenhouse growing area, with over 5,494,164 m2 under glass or plastic. The region has 1,740 operating farms, with 1,000 of those producing oilseed and grain crops. Fruit production includes apples, grapes, peaches, strawberries, and tomatoes. Additionally, the region has more than 15 wineries that are producing exceptional wine from homegrown grapes. Regional marketing consistently showcases the local agricultural industry and all that Windsor Essex farms have to offer.

The Essex County Federation of Agriculture represents 1,740 total farms throughout the Windsor Essex region. Their primary purpose is to bring up local concerns and initiatives to resolve independently and with the Ontario Federation of Agriculture. The federation is a prominent promoter of shopping local. It offers agricultural education for farmers and engaging learning material for children. They also provide events to connect farmers and continue learning, growing, and improving the industry.

Unemployment has been high in recent years in Windsor Essex. Workforce Windsor Essex has been working to equip and empower jobseekers for a career in agriculture to support continued growth in the industry. 

The Windsor Essex region is 80% dedicated agricultural land use. The Essex Region Conservation works hard to preserve this land for future use and keep clean water resources throughout the area. Grants are offered for farms to implement soil protection structures and improve soil health and preserve water quality. Additionally, the Essex Region Conservation Authority conducts regular monitoring reports regarding the forests, wetlands, and water resources throughout the Windsor Essex area, ensuring that preservation is maintained.

Soil

The soil in Windsor Essex has a history of being used primarily for agriculture, limiting the potential for soil contamination from other industries in the past. The soil types found include lacustrine, limestone till, lucustro-morainic, sand, and marsh. While some of these soil types drain poorly, they are suitable for growing beans, burley, corn, wheat, vegetables, and, less favourably, grapes and fruit trees. 

Weather

The weather in the Windsor Essex region is arguably the warmest part of the province, with winter temperatures averaging around -7°C and rarely getting colder than -15°C. Summer temperatures average around 28°C, rarely surpassing 32°C. The average rainfall for the area ranges between 18 mm to 69 mm month over month, with an average snowfall of 124 mm in February. The longest days have roughly 15 hours 17 minutes of sunshine. The shortest days of the year in winter have just 9 hours and 5 minutes of daylight.

There are an estimated 6.6 months of the growing season from April 15 – November 2 annually. The extended growing season and favourable climate throughout the year make for an ideal location for agriculture.

Water & Air

The Windsor Essex area is surrounded by several water sources, including Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, and the Detroit River flowing around Windsor. For almost a decade, the water tested in the region has received a 100% rating from the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP). Water is primarily provided by the municipalities closer to urban centres and towns. However, some residents continue to maintain private wells that are also regularly tested. 

The air quality in the region hovers between good and moderate.

Animals & Insects

Wildlife in the Windsor Essex region includes familiar species such as opossums, coyotes, rabbits, and squirrels. Since the region borders lakes and rivers, there are annual reports of insect swarms for lakeside communities. These large insect populations indicate healthy water sources, requiring ample oxygen to survive. Fish are also readily available throughout the region year-round, with Windsor Essex known as the "Walleye Capital of Canada."
